BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
The son of an army officer, Powell
was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, and then worked at the
publishers Duckworth & Co for ten years. In 1934, he married Lady Violet
Pakenham. They had two sons, one in 1940 and one in 1946. After leaving
Duckworth, Powell did some script writing and some travelling in the US
and Mexico. On returning to England in 1937, he worked as a full-time writer,
producing novels and literary criticism. During the Second World War, Powell
joined the army and rose from the rank of second lieutenant to major, serving
first in the Welch Regiment and then in the Intelligence Corps as a liaison
officer with Czechs and Poles among others. In 1951, 'A Question of Upbringing'
was published. This book was to be the first of 12 volumes, written over
a quarter of century, which would make up 'A Dance to the Music of Time'
and for which Powell is most remembered. In 1952, he moved to Somerset where
he spent the rest of his life. Powell also wrote other novels, two plays,
much literary criticism, and autobiographical works, not least his diaries
(the first volume of which was published in 1995). He served as a trustee
of the National Portrait Galley in the 1960s and 1970s, and was also a vice-president
of the Society of Genealogists. In 1956 he was awarded a CBE, and, in 1988,
was made a Companion of Honour. But, in 1973, he declined a knighthood.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS:
1) The first line of basic information
may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different
names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or
uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown,
or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British'
a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was
compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts
were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if
they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates
and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with
caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are
only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies.
4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges,
and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising.
I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some
variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited
myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their
original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the
titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries. |
