BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Kierkegaard, a religious philosopher,
is considered to be the founder of existentialism. He is feted in his home
country as one of the great writers in the Danish golden age of intellectual
and artistic activity. The youngest of seven children, he spent the first
part of his life in Jutland. When 12, his family moved to Copenhagen, where
his father became a successful retailer. Søren Kierkegaard spent
ten years studying theology at Copenhagen University and eventually graduated
in 1840 two years after his father died. Biographers consider this period
to have been most important for his spiritual development. In September
1840, he became engaged to Regine Olsen, who was only 17 at the time. Regretting
his action, and thinking he had done wrong, he withdrew from the engagement
and went to Berlin for six months. Regine married happily, but Kierkegaard
never forgot her and later dedicated the whole of his literary oeuvre to
her. On returning from Berlin, he published 'Either-Or' under a pseudonym,
which presented, for the first time, his basic ideas on existential philosophy.
Later, he published important critiques of Hegel and of the German Romantics,
contributed to the development of modernism, and made concerted attempts
to revitalise Christian faith. Kierkegaard's journal was written on more
7,000 pages and contains unfinished works as well as alternative versions
of published works. It also gives a good insight into his thought process,
and detailed accounts of his experiences and projects.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS:
1) The first line of basic information
may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different
names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or
uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown,
or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British'
a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was
compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts
were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if
they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates
and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with
caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are
only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies.
4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges,
and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising.
I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some
variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited
myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their
original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the
titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries. |
